Acronyms are the rage in the computer age. Words made from initials convey a message that a full name may not. Bicycle across Nature's Grandeur (BANG) gives you the idea that you're in for some great scenery on this tour. BANG lets you know that the organized ride always takes place the first Saturday of July, right around the Fourth. Ride director Arland Cutler and the Muskegon Bicycle Club add some holiday flair by giving each rider a few snappers to liven things up more than the occasional blowout. BANG also includes a 100-mile-route option. To add to the festivities, the Muskegon Summerfest arts and crafts fair is always held on the same weekend. From the starting point, at the boat launch pier at Muskegon State Park, you'll get an eyeful of the scenery BANG is known for. The view is of Muskegon Lake, a rivermouth made into a lake by the huge sandbar you're standing on. Across the channel between Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan lies the World War II submarine USS Silversides, a floating museum. Riding north out of the park, you'll get a taste of Great Lakes Scenery before turning east to skirt the shore of Muskegon Lake.
