In German fahrrad means "cycling" and Frankenmuth is nothing if not German. The small town has turned its German heritage into a thriving business. In fact, it's the most popular tourism destination in Michigan. On the third weekend of May you can join the local Optimists Club and 300-plus bicyclists on 25-, 30-, and 100-kilometer routes. That's 16, 31 and 62 miles in non-Euro terms. The 31-mile version was chosen to be described here. When you finally tear yourself from Frankenmuth, you'll pedal eat through mixed woods and farmland paralleling the meandering Cass River, crossing four tributary streams en route to the quaint farm community of Vassar. Vassar is probably what Frankenmuth would be like without tourism. The towers and spires of Frankenmuth will poke the horizon on your way back. Winding through town, you'll cross a picturesque covered bridge on the way back to Heritage Park. You might think that neighboring towns would jump on the bandwagon with some ethnic theme or another. Don't look for a European Union in Michigan though. Frankenmuth in one of a kind.

Very pleasant ride. Flat most of the way. One short patch of bad asphalt for about half a mile early in the ride, but after that good road conditions. Very scenic and almost no traffice outside of Frankenmuth and Vassar. There is almost no shoulder, but every single car that passed me slowed and gave me plenty of room - many drivers waved! Restroom facilities easily available in Frankenmuth and Vassar.
