This area was discovered by several mountain bikers out of Springfield, who called the place the Mecca because "You end up praying, one way or the other." There are two main routes through the area. Forest Service Road 1002 is a double-track road that can easily be ridden by beginners.
Some unmaintained roads branch off FS 1002 and FS 1195, which is currently unmaintained. These roads offer some fun and challenging riding for those who want a little more than double-track. Most of these roads are dead-end trips that allow you to return to the main routes without getting lost. Wildflowers grow out in the open area left by the burn, and in spring, dogwoods scatter patches of white on the surrounding wooded hillsides.
