The Hendersonville–Flat Rock Challenge will try your skills not only at distance but also at climbing. This 44.4-mile ride takes you from downtown Hendersonville past apple orchards to the east side of the county then south to Flat Rock. From there the route loops through the southwestern corner then curves around Davis Mountain on the way back into Hendersonville. While many of the roads are gentle ups and downs, there are some serious hills. Few services are available from Flat Rock west, so plan accordingly for your water and snack needs. The route takes you from downtown through Jackson Park and toward the east side of Henderson County. You’ll pass the Henderson County airport and the Western North Carolina Air Museum on Airport Road. You’ll find that Tracy Grove and Orchard Roads are aptly named for the rolling hills covered with apple trees of all varieties. You’ll see why Hendersonville hosts the North Carolina Apple Festival each September.
