The Hanging Rock Challenge lives up to its name but also offers gorgeous views of the area’s mountains and lush valleys. Starting in the small town of Pilot Mountain, this route takes you on curvy and hilly back roads, first around Sauratown Mountain and then on a clockwise tour of Hanging Rock. The first part of the route covers remote areas with no services, so be advised to carry water and snacks. Halfway around Hanging Rock is the town of Danbury, which has several restaurants and a park where you can rest and replenish your energy. Although the route has a lot of climbs, most are short but steep; however, the downhills and fabulous vistas make the climbing well worthwhile.
