The Old Salem to Bethabara Ramble is one of my favorite hometown tours. The 18.3-mile distance can be deceiving because Winston-Salem is quite hilly, but the interesting and varied sights make it worthwhile. The ride begins in the restored eighteenth-century village of Old Salem and skirts the edge of downtown Winston-Salem as it moves through the historic West End neighborhood. The next section travels through Buena Vista, one of the city’s most desirable neighborhoods. The route then passes through the grounds of the elegant Graylyn International Conference Center and Reynolda, with its quaint village of shops and restaurants—a great place for a break. From there you take Reynolda Road, past Wake Forest University to Historic Bethabara Park. The route then winds past the site of the old polo grounds, through Sherwood Forest and Buena Vista, on its way back to Old Salem.

I rode this route starting around 10:30 am, starting at my home near Old Salem rather than the Old Salem Visitor's Center. The Glade Street ride through the West End and the Hawthorne/Arbor and Chester through Warwick portions through the Buena Vista neighborhood were lovely this spring, as was the area near Bethabara. Traffic was light in these areas. The Reynolda, Polo and Peace Haven Rd portions were quite busy and I am embarrassed to report that my fellow Winston-Salem citizens tended toward the rude as I rode along, so please be cautious on these portions. The outgoing route is an easy ride, the return features a couple of short but steep climbs and a couple of longer climbs. These are not particularly difficult but may intimidate newer riders. This ride will remain a part of my repertoire for a quick in-town ride but it will be something done only when I don't have time to go elsewhere.
