The 48.9-mile Lake Mattamuskeet Challenge begins on the south side of the largest natural lake in North Carolina and circles the eastern two-thirds. A short diversion on the eastern end takes you through the small community of Engelhard on the coast of Pamlico Sound. The terrain is flat and most of the roads are straight, allowing you to look for the many varieties of wildlife that seek refuge in this protected area. There are few services available in this fairly remote area, so plan accordingly for water and food.
