The Pamlico Sound Classic, a century tour, takes you from historic New Bern across two rivers into Pamlico County for a large loop around Gum Tree Swamp and through small coastal communities. The flat terrain makes for easy pedaling through mostly remote areas, except when strong winds prevail. Services are few and far between, so you’ll want to stock up when you have the opportunity. The starting point for this ride is in New Bern, the second oldest town in North Carolina, which was named for the city of Bern in Switzerland by the German and Swiss colonists who settled here in 1710. New Bern was part of the Carolina Charter issued by England’s King Charles II, who appointed Royal Governor William Tryon to oversee the colony. Tryon selected New Bern as the site of the first permanent capital of what was to become North Carolina. He erected as his royal residence and capitol building the elegant Tryon Palace, called one of the most beautiful public buildings in America. You’ll want to take time to visit the palace either before or after your ride.

Great loop, very well marked flat and fast road ride. Flat and easy or I would give it 5 stars.
