The 27.1-mile Fort Fisher to Southport Cruise explores a small coastal town at the mouth of the Cape Fear River and then crosses by ferry to the coastal island across the river where Fort Fisher is located. The sea breezes will cool you as you pedal along these flat roads; however, the seeming ease of the route can be offset by strong coastal winds. This route links the town of Southport with Fort Fisher State Historic Site, the North Carolina Aquarium, and Carolina Beach State Park. Since the starting point is in the middle of the route, you have the choice of which section to do first. You’ll probably want to base your decision on the ferry schedule.
