This ride's general location is in the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C., between Arlington and Purcellville. This is a 44-mile long, 100-foot wide corridor with a paved bike path stretching from the shadow of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington west to the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. The trail now serves people escaping to the scenic, open spaces of the rural Virginia countryside beyond the Capital Beltway. In rural Loudoun County, the trail passes by lush horse farms; you may spot horses and hounds setting off on a fox hunt.

The W&OD trail is actually 45 miles in length and is a wonderful escape, IMO. Most areas of the trail are clean and safe with a wide variety of plant and animal life. Runners/Trail walkers are generally quite wonderful to each other and always there to lend a helping hand if needed. The trail seperates into a bike and equestrian trails, both equally wonderful. One major benefit of using the W&OD is that you ARE, for the most part, able to access towns in case of emergency and for rests (Take caution past marker 26-ish as there are no businesses until Leesburg that I have seen and parts are not shaded which could potentially be dangerous if u r not prepared. Take plenty of fluids) Trail is relatively flat in most places that I have walked. Wonderful place to get some trail running/cycling in. I use this trail every day.

The W&OD is a beautiful trail winding through the Northern Virginia Countryside. The far western 12 mi. of the 44mi. long trail is the least crowded section of the trail. From Leesburg to Purcellville much of the trail is canopied with lush trees while ferns and wildflowers cover the trailside. As an inline skater,I find the trail uncrowded, smooth, and safe. The W&OD is gem in the D.C./No.Va.area.
