The Upper Alarka valley is one of the most beautiful around. It begins with a gradual twisting climb to high, open pasturages. You'll then head into a steep climb that takes you to Deep Gap. For the majority of the ride you'll follow alongside Alarka Creek, a small but lively stream. At some points the road is so close to the creek you can feel the cool air drifting up from the spray of the rapids.
The farther you go up the valley, the narrower the road gets, as if you're being squeezed by the mountains. By the time you reach the top of the climb, the road is hardly more than a single lane. Take care on the descent down Deep Gap Road; it's often washed over with gravel. Points of interest: Scenic Valley; trout stream; views on Deep Gap Road; friendly people.
