Gem mines and lots of them. That's what you will see on this route. The Cowee Valley is renowned for its precious stones, and the mines are a main tourist attraction. The mine supplies the dirt and a sluice, and you supply the labor to see what you find. Kids (and rockhounds, of course) love it! You'll also pass by Perry's Water Gardens which has free tours, and the Cowee Creek Pottery- all in a beautiful mountain view with very little traffic. Points of interest: Gem mines; Perry's Water Gardens (open Mon-Sat: 9-12 & 1-5, Sun: 1-5) free admission; Cowee Creek Pottery (just off route); Snow Hill Inn Bed & Breakfast.
