Beautiful mountain roads highlight this wonderful ride through rural apple orchard country. Some of the terrain is rolling, but there are also several long, hard climbs and one six-mile-long, fast winding descent into a river valley. Several side trips are available along the way. However, it is best not to attempt riding into Chimney Rock or on to Lake Lure during the height of the tourist season. If you do, expect a lot of traffic. Fall is the best time to get fresh cider at the apple orchards. Members of the club like to use this for a training ride. Points of interest: Bat Cave (restaurants, native arts and crafts, cider mill); side trip into Chimney Rock and Lake Lure (filming location of "Dirty Dancing")- avoid this side trip during peak tourist season, it has very heavy auto traffic; apple orchards and cider mills.

The rides in and around Bat Cave provide serenity, beauty, and some butt-kicking climbs. The artsy shops in Bat Cave provide a needed break and allow you to meet some of the nicest people in the country. The beautiful views in and around Chimney Rock will tempt you to ride this in the fall, but follow the advice of the guidbook and steer clear of this season. Beautiful, indeed.
