With only a few steep pitches, this ride up and along the top of Hankey Mountain is very satisfying. The trail is smooth and the scenery is great as you spin along through the oak forests. Numerous wildlife clearings enhance the potential for seeing animals. Highlights: Mountain views, waterbars, smooth trail, stream views

Ah, Hankey. It is smooth, but not totally. There are a few rocky ledges to negotiate. But the best thing about this ride is the beautiful wildflowers and wildlife. I have seen salamanders, grouse and some wild columbine on this trail--well, on the climb, at least. Once you hit the downhill, you're going too fast to really check out the scenery. It's pretty fun, and a good long climb--about 1/2 hour or more of straight climbing, with a real tough top and a false summit, to be prepared to keep climbing just when you think you're done--make sure to hit Dowell's Draft trail on the way down for the fun downhill.
