If all cyclists were like David Brown, books like this would never be published. Mr. Brown, a Washington lawyer, owns a weekend house in Round Hill, Virginia, 5 miles from the end of the W & OD Trail. With a detailed Virginia map in hand, he started creating his own bike routes that include historic and scenic areas of Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland. My great thanks to him for sharing his two favorites, which I’ve combined here into one long ride. Many of the roads are quiet and little traveled. Just to the west is an apple-growing region. The busier routes feature wide shoulders. The two Potomac crossings can be made on safe bridges. By turning around at South Mountain Natural Area in Maryland, you can shave about one-fifth the distance from the ride. Things to see: Antietam Battlefield, Harpers Ferry National Historic Park, farmland.
