This is a route suggested by a person who knows more about biking than almost anyone around the Beltway: Mike Dornfield, a former associate bicycling coordinator for Washington, D.C. Mike developed the route as a weekend getaway, but I’ve adapted it as a ride from Metrorail’s Red Line through the inner suburbs of Montgomery County, with a destination of the quiet country town of Poolesville, a Civil War site of minor importance. On the way out and the way back you bisect the toney community of Potomac, Maryland, where the huge houses are likely to be augmented by a horse barn and a steeplechase course. The ride concludes with a historic section of the Potomac River before ending in Georgetown. The optional return will lead you back to the Metro if you parked there. Things to see: Horse farms, fields, historic Poolesville, Maryland, Sugarloaf Mountain, Potomac riverfront.

This is a fantastic ride! Especially b/c of access to Metro. Trail takes you through woodland, streams, and lots of rolling farmland. Very pretty. Most roads not heavily trafficked, once away from Metro. Be sure to pack your carbs, the hills will get you!
