Far from my tie-dyed, gritty town of Takoma Park (“where old hippies go to die’’) lies a land of horse farms and houses the size of small hotels, five-car garages, and home squash courts. It’s Potomac, Maryland, the Washington area’s own East Egg, and it’s threaded with some two-lane blacktop that beckons cyclists. This chapter outlines a figure eight that’s a great training ride. Things to see: Stream-cut ravines, meadows, ritzy neighborhoods.

We excluded the top loop, stearing clear of River Road portion. When trail went down to MacArthur Blvd, it was beautiful and flat. Mile-long hill near Old Angler's Inn with steep grade was very dangerous. Then heavy downpour and lightning storm hit and by the time we reached Falls Road we were soaked. Be prepared for the steep, windy road with no shoulder just past the Inn. Loved most of the ride.
