Here’s a ride that takes you through a part of Washington that tourists rarely see—the places beyond the monuments where people actually live. The route meanders through row-house neighborhoods both historic and of more recent vintage. Catch a bit of Tak oma Park’s New Age funk before visiting the site where the South almost won the Civil War, then see one of the capital’s premier upper-middle-class neighborhoods before swinging through Rock Creek Park to urbane Dupont Circle. Things to see: Historic Logan Circle, row-house neighborhoods, Fort Stevens, Takoma Park, Gold Coast, lower Rock Creek Park, Dupont Circle.

I cannot understand why so many guides to biking in DC advise the use of 13th street N.W. as a north-south route. 14th street is a much safer choice and has a marked bike lane along most of its length. 13th is wide enough to attract a lot of vehicle traffic but too narrow to allow motorists to pass bikes safely -- not a good street.
