This 5.6-mile lollipop hike is a moderate stroll from the Chaco Canyon floor to the canyon rim. The hike along the Pueblo Alto Trail will take hikers to several scenic overlooks of Chaco Canyon as well as views of a unique set of stairs that have been carved into the canyon wall. Be sure to check the park website for closures that may occur during flash flood seasons.
Between AD 900 and 1150, it is believed that Chaco Canyon was a major center of culture for the Puebloan people. The Chacoans chiseled and shaped sandstone blocks and hauled wood from great distances in order to build what were at the time the largest buildings in North America. The advanced architectural skills of the people are undeniable, as many of the buildings look to have been aligned to capture the solar
and lunar cycles.
