This 3.8-mile out-and-back trail takes hikers through beautiful aspen groves down to an area known as Purgatory Flats. Once at the Flats, hikers can enjoy time along Cascade Creek or extend their hike on the Animas River Trail. This area is also a popular place for bird-watching and offers a great fall foliage hike through the aspens. The Purgatory Trail is a great day-trip trail that winds down through a beautiful aspen forest and then pops out alongside Cascade Creek. The area down in the valley is a popular place for overnight camping or makes a great rest stop for hikers out on a longer journey. The trail begins directly across from the entrance to the Durango Mountain Resort, a beautiful place to spend the night if you are staying in the area.
