The Pass Creek Trail to Engineer Mountain summit is a Durango, Colorado, classic hike. Locals and visitors alike flock to this area in the summertime for first-time highaltitude experiences or to train for some of those Colorado 14ers. This 6.6-mile out-and-back hike takes hikers to almost 13,000 feet above sea level. The gradual ascent makes the hike ideal for first-timers. The network of trails in the area also attracts bikers and horseback riders. The easy access to the trail from US 550 makes Engineer Mountain a great option for a half-day outing in the summer. The fact that the highway is plowed in the winter also makes it an option for those looking to practice their winter backcountry travel skills. The rest area at Coal Bank Pass provides restrooms for before and after the hike.
