The Square Tower Trail in Hovenweep National Monument is an excellent adventure for families. This 1.75-mile round-trip hike takes hikers for a short journey around the rim of Little Ruin Canyon and offers beautiful views of the ruins located in the canyon as well as of the surrounding area. Take advantage of one of few national park facilities that allows pets on the trails. Hovenweep National Monument is located on the border of Colorado and Utah, equidistant from the towns of Blanding, Utah; Bluff , Utah; and Cortez, Colorado. The remoteness of this park makes it an unlikely place to just stumble upon. Those who visit really want to be here, and they have good reason; the site’s rich cultural history coupled with the raw, high desert beauty of the landscape make Hovenweep National Monument a worthy destination. The monument is also reliably less crowded than its neighbor to the east, Mesa Verde National Park, making it a good choice for folks hoping to escape busy trails.
