The basin containing Upper Lake looks like the glacier that carved it melted yesterday. After circling the north shore of Stone Lake, the Roaring Fork Trail climbs a short way to end at a minor pond very close to Upper Lake. Above, rising in a dizzyingly huge bowl of the Continental Divide, the scene in August looks as though the most recent glacier melted yesterday. From a geologic perspective, it did. Beyond the lake, there is no trail but also no barriers to following a stream along the steep flank of Hiamovi Mountain to a broad tundra meadow. A final steep walk to a less high point on the Divide, leads from Hell Canyon to a pass overlooking Paradise Park in Rocky Mountain National Park. The pass is some 810 feet higher than Upper Lake.
