Northeast Portland is without a doubt the most diverse quadrant of the city. This ride ranges across the spectrum. Begin at Tom McCall Waterfront Park and follow the Burnside Bridge east across the Willamette. Once a no-go zone for bikes, lower E. Burnside Street now has a generous bike lane—perfect for cruising this newly hip district’s nightclubs and bars. The route turns north at NE 12th Avenue and crosses Interstate 84 into the Lloyd District, still in search of an identity after 1950s-era urban renewal. Parking-lot wastelands surround isolated high-rises. Fast-food chains ring the Lloyd Center shopping mall. Here the city serves cars, not the other way around. Still, this is Portland—there are bike lanes!
