San Francisco Botanical Garden at Strybing Arboretum

Take your family to experience the beauty and nature of a variety of plants, flowers, trees and other flora when you visit the San Francisco Botanical Garden at Strybing Arboretum. Offering daily guided tours of the grounds by trained and experienced experts in the field of botany who can provide you with a great deal of information about the care and environmental needs of the various plants, you can also take classes at the arboretum on subjects ranging from docent training to succulents and perennials, wild birds of San Francisco and even Chinese brush painting. The botanical gardens also include a bookstore with a great deal of information about taking care of plants and shrubs as well as a regular plant sale where you can purchase some of the displays you see in the gardens.

Golden Gate National Recreation Area

Visit one of the largest urban national parks at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. This area includes more than 60 miles of California coastline, including the area below the Golden Gate Bridge on the San Francisco side of the bay. The park also includes several hiking trails that wind through the hills and forest area, providing gorgeous views of the ocean as well as being filled with flowers, plants and wildlife for you to discover.The Golden Gate National Recreation Area is a great place to take your family as well, with camp sites such as the Hawk, Haypress and Kirby cove campgrounds, where you can enjoy the natural environment and still be just a few minutes from the heart of San Francisco. The recreation area also has great sightseeing locations all along the miles of coastline where you can watch the birds or even the sea lions and whales in the ocean.

Conservatory of Flowers

Stroll through Golden Gate Park with your family and you will come to the Conservatory of Flowers, where you can take a tour of the galleries filled with many interesting plants and flowers. You can book a private tour where your guide will lead you through the conservatory, telling you all about the exhibits, or tour the buildings yourself and view the displays at your leisure. The Conservatory of Flowers features displays of such flora as aquatic plants, potted plants, lowland and highland tropics plants and more. There are also many special exhibits, such as the Theobrosia Cacao, coconut trees, orange trees and several others. The conservatory also has several programs to teach you about the characteristics and environment of these exotic plants.
