Camping in Helen, Georgia
Surrounded by nature and plenty of opportunities for outdoor pursuits, the small town of Helen (best known as Alpine Helen) is an ideal base camp for exploring. Helen is an especially popular in destination during October because of the autumn colors. While there are plenty of campgrounds surrounding the town and a variety of lodging levels and comforts available, you should book well in advance if you're planning to visit during high season.

Yonah Mountain

Open year round, this campground is near the Chattahoochee River and just minutes outside the town of Helen. Yonah Mountain has both tent and RV sites and offers a number of amenities, including a picnic pavilion, a playground, swimming pool, TV and card-playing rooms and volleyball and basketball courts. Movies can be rented here and products for sale include firewood bundles, propane and ice cream and other quick snacks. While this is not a religious campground, there are church services offered here during the summer. The campground offers direct access to the Yonah Mountain hiking trails, as well as the Chattahoochee River, where tubing, canoeing and fishing are possible.

Jenny's Creek Campground

Offering large shaded sites and tent camping (no RVs), this campground is in an ideal area, just outside Helen and only four miles from Cleveland. The campground offers all amenities you can expect, including hot showers, full hook-ups or primitive tenting (your choice), laundry room and a camp store. Jenny's Creek runs alongside the campground, and there's also a large pond and gold panning on site. No RVs are allowed, and this is a quiet campground, so no loud noises after 10 p.m. While there are no entertainment facilities within the campground, Jenny's Creek allows easy access to miles of hiking trails, waterfalls in nearby Dahlonega and water sports on the Chattahoochee  River.

Gold N Gem Grubbin

With camping allowed on the river, in the field or in the woods, Gold N Gem is one of the most varied campgrounds in the area. Tent camping is primitive, but RVs have access to full hookups. There is a cabin bath house as well. If that wasn't enough, this place is practically a theme park of the natural kind. Visitors come here to pan for gold in the private creek, where nuggets and a variety of gemstones can be found. The campground also offers mini-golf, fishing and access to hiking trails.
