What to Do in Bali

What to Do in Bali
Bali is an Indonesian island famous for its clear blue waters and impressive surf. If you are planning a visit to Bali, you'll find numerous things to do on this one island. If you enjoy the water, consider doing some scuba diving and exploring Bali's many famous dive sites. If you prefer hiking, consider going on a hike up to the top of a volcano for breathtaking views of the island.

Go Surfing

The perfect tropical climate, year-round surf and consistent barrel-shaped waves make Bali one of the best surfing sites in the world. Although the surf in Bali is perfect for advanced surfers, there are also plenty of options for others. Kuta Beach is an excellent spot for beginners, although be aware of the undertow there, and stay within the red and yellow flags. Experienced surfers will want to visit Nusa Dua, which offers consistent right-hand breaking waves between September and March, although for the best waves, you'll need to hire a boat as they break far offshore. If you would rather watch the pros at work, then take a visit to Nusa Lembongan, which has three of the best, and most deadly, surf in the world. If you have never surfed before and would like to learn, Bali Surf Camp and Surf School offers lessons.

Scuba Diving

Bali is one of the premier places to dive in the world. The island has clear waters, with spectacular reef and wreck dives, all very accessible to divers. There are giant coral walls to explore and numerous types of fish to see. Bali's most famous spot for diving, accessible by just a short 30-minute boat ride, is Menjangen Island, which has visibility of up to 164 feet and features numerous sponge, coral and fish as well as incredible wall diving. Menjangen Island is an excellent dive location for divers of all levels. Pro Dive Bali is one popular scuba dive operator in Bali which offers trips to Menjangen Island and other locations.

Climb a Volcano

Another popular activity to do in Bali is to climb a volcano. This is considered a spiritual experience, and should only be done with a guide. Many of Bali's temples are located up in the mountains. You'll need to listen closely to your guide so that you don't offend the gods. One company that offers a volcano hike tour is Tours-Bali which has tours up to Batur Volcano. The hike begins early with a 2 a.m. pick-up so that by the time that you get to the top of the peak, at 6 a.m., you are treated to spectacular views as the sun rises and lights up the surrounding area.
