In the mountains of western Maryland, Deep Creek is home to the Deep Creek Lake State Park. This mountainous region offers camping, whitewater rafting, boating, bicycling, fishing, kayaking and swimming in the summer. It offers snowmobiling, skiing, snowshoeing, bobsledding and ice skating in the winter. Averaging 90 inches of snowfall per year, the Deep Creek area is a year-round recreational destination.

Bicycling Trails at Deep Creek Lake

There are four hiking and mountain biking trails maintained by the Deep Creek Lake State park; they range from 2 to 8 miles long. Some are located on flat grounds, and those trails are rated as easy. Others are more strenuous, scaling the sides of the mountains at various elevations. Other trails exist in the area, maintained by local city and county parks departments.

Boating at Deep Creek

Whitewater rafting and kayaking opportunities are available in the area. Adventure Sports Center offers equipment rental for kayaking, as well as instruction and guided trips. Their facility has an artificial whitewater course; it's used for educational purposes. There's also a park area that allows for picnicking and relaxation. The course is unique because it forms a complete loop, and the course difficulty can be manipulated in order to teach beginners or to mimic rougher waters. Exploring Deep Creek Lake through kayak or canoe makes for a relaxing day. It allows one to experience the solitude and serenity of the region.

Skiing and Snowshoeing

In Pleasant Valley's Deep Creek lake area, Backbone farm is a popular organic vegetable farm situated on over 520 acres of field and forest. In the winter, the farm gets over 100 inches of snow and maintains cross-country Nordic ski trails. Backbone rents snowshoes and welcomes guests to bring their own. Guided snowshoe walks are available throughout the winter.

Wisp Resort at Deep Creek is Maryland's only downhill ski resort. A range of difficulty levels provides slopes for beginners and more experienced skiers. Winter diversions for the non-skiers include snowboarding, tubing and a mountain coaster.
