Things to Do in Lake Tahoe in October
October is a special time in Lake Tahoe as the summer winds down and hints of winter begin to show. The weather around the lake is very comfortable for outdoor activities like hiking, biking and sightseeing. If you are planning a trip to Lake Tahoe, check out the events that take place in October.

Kokanee Salmon Festival

Every October 3rd and 4th, nature enthusiasts gather to watch as the salmon return, swimming upstream to their spawning grounds. The attraction has created a festival where spectators gather during the annual event and enjoy the time with various special events for children and adults as well as sharing great food and educational programs designed around the running of the salmon. The festival features things like a 5k or 10k Kokanee trail run, along with a 1/2k children's tadpole trot and a even a salmon feed. Ongoing for over 20 years, the festival takes place at the Taylor Creek visitors center in South Lake Tahoe.

Donner Party Hike

Reenact the travels of the Donner Party when you take part in the Donner Party Hike. This annual event combines history with a great hiking experience while you enjoy the company of fellow hikers and share in the travails that beset the party as they attempted to cross the Sierra Nevada mountains near Truckee. This event occurs on the first weekend of October each year and includes six different hiking trails and range in distance from one and a half to six miles long. The trails range in difficulty from moderate to a more strenuous hike and include information given by your guide on the problems that the party faced while trying to get through the mountains. You will see first hand what they had to endure and what caused them to make the choices they did.

Truckee River Day

Help to improve the environment and landscape around the Truckee River when you take part in Truckee River Days in October. This annual event is designed to protect the area around Lake Tahoe with participants planting native trees and shrubs, cleaning up the hiking trails and restoring the fields and meadows to their natural beauty. The two day event ends with a celebration where all those involved in the work get together at the Granite Flat Campground to share their experiences and enjoy the hard work that was done to improve the Truckee River area with fun activities, special attractions and refreshments.
