From its beaches and parks to farmer's markets and even its prehistoric activity, you can explore any number of local places for free in Los Angeles.

Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits

Venture into the heart of Los Angeles when you visit the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits. The Tar Pits boast one of the world's most famous collections of prehistoric fossils. They hold a great deal of information about what life was like during the age of saber-toothed cats and other mammals that roamed the area. Visit the Page Museum on the site of the Tar Pits, where you will learn much more about the animals and their history. Exploring the Tar Pits will help you discover many things about nature and how the world developed during the Ice Age.
The Tar Pits are free to visit and you can visit the museum for free on the first Tuesday of each month.

Hike through Griffith Park

With over 4,000 acres of land, Griffith Park has many hiking trails for you to explore with native landscaping and things to see. The well-marked Mt. Hollywood hiking trail offers great views of the city and surrounding area with a gradual slope up to the ridge, giving you an easy walk and ending with an amazing view from the top of Dante's Peak. Check out the Brush Canyon hike where you will stroll among lush green plants and trees leading through a canyon. Trees provide a green canopy while gentle streams run alongside the trails. You will feel like you're in a very remote area while you're actually only minutes from the city. The Griffith Park trails are free to explore and provide you with a great outdoor experience.

Topanga State Park

Set within the hills of the Santa Monica mountains, Topanga State Park is filled with hiking trails and fantastic views of the surrounding area. Stroll through green grasslands and recreational areas with over 36 miles of trails. You'll see many examples of geological formations, including sedimentary rocks, fossils and volcanic rock formations. The trails also take you by native plants and shrubs that have developed into cliff gardens. Experience waterfalls that run from the cliffs down into pools at the bottom of the rock formations. The park also includes several varieties of wildlife as well as sightseeing locations from which you can see the entire park.
