Fun Things to Do in Ohio

Fun Things to Do in Ohio
Ohio is home to over 70 state parks, making it an ideal state to visit for those looking to get back to nature rather than engage in tourist traps. While side trips to big cities like Cleveland and Cincinnati are fine for seeing the more famous sites, if you are an outdoor enthusiast, you'll want to seek out the natural wonders of this under-advertised wilderness paradise.

Canoeing at Beaver Creek State Park

Beaver Creek State Park offers plenty of outdoor recreation including fishing, hiking, biking and even horseback riding. One of the best things to do at Beaver Creek, however, can only be done in a canoe or raft. Beaver Creek offers a 12-mile journey that shows off the amazing scenery of the park including some majestic cliffs. Keep going far enough down the river and you will even come up against Class III rapids down by the Fredericktown Bridge.

Hiking in Pike Lake State Park

If you're coming from the south and you love a good hike, then make sure to set aside a day or two for camping in Pike Lake State Park. Located near Bainbridge, this park offers up five different trails for hiking. While none of these trails are particularly long, the advantage is that the difficulty ranges from easiest enough for beginners to trails that will challenge with rough terrain and steep hills. Pack some sturdy hiking boots as some of these trails can land you in a heavily forested part of the park.

Mountain Biking at Hueston Woods State Park

If mountain biking is what you want to do in Ohio, then you probably won't do much better than Hueston Woods State Park. This is a very popular area for Dayton bikers to head to when they want to get off the road and challenge themselves. This park offers bikers 7 miles of varied terrain that can suit the experienced and novice mountain biker alike. The trails are situated as an enormous loop with side trail connectors. Even on the difficult trails the terrain can be surprisingly even, but the surrounding scenery is enough to distract you so expect to brake yourself without warning several times.
