The Best Camping and Fishing in Pennsylvania

The Best Camping and Fishing in Pennsylvania
With over 100 state parks and conservation areas, the state of Pennsylvania has become a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors to the Keystone State will find numerous opportunities for camping and fishing---from pitching a tent by Lake Erie to ice fishing on the Pymatuning Reservoir. Along with camping and fishing, other popular activities in Pennsylvania include hiking, biking, snowmobiling and whitewater rafting.

Ohiopyle

Located in the southeastern corner of the state, Ohiopyle State Park stretches over 19,000 miles over rugged forests and quiet creeks. Fishing is one of the most popular pastime at this park---the Youghiogheny River provides an ample stock of fingerling trout and you can find an all-tackle trophy trout program on an eight-mile stretch of the river. If you prefer fishing in streams, make sure to head to the Meadow Run area.

As for camping, the park has 226 campsites that open from early March to late December. All of the sites provide flushable toilets, hot water wash houses, a fire ring and a picnic table. Some of the sites also come equipped with electric hookups. Keep in mind: make sure to reserve a campsite in advance since they can fill up quickly.

Presque Island State Park

If you enjoy water sports, then be sure to check out Presque Island State Park---a beach getaway in northwestern Pennsylvania. Along with boating and scuba diving, Presque Island is a haven for fishermen. Every year, thousands of anglers come to the park to catch perch and trout on Lake Erie, and to fish for walleye and smelt on Presque Isle Bay. Popular fishing sites include the East and West piers, the Waterworks ponds and Perry Monument.

Although the park doesn't offer accommodations, you will find numerous private campgrounds in the surrounding area. One of the most scenic campsites is Sara's Campground, which allows you to pitch your tent on the Lake Erie shoreline. You may also want to consider the Hills Family Campground, which offers grassy tent sites and cabin rentals.

Pymatuning State Park

Pymatuning is big in every sense of the word---it's the largest state park in Pennsylvania and it features the biggest lake in the entire state. Most of the park's activities revolve around the Pymatuning Reservoir, from boating to swimming to fishing. Anglers will find a wide variety of fish in these waters, like carp, crappie, bluegill and bass. In the wintertime, ice fishing is a popular sport too. Both Ohio and Pennsylvania fishing licenses are honored at the park.

After a long day on the water, you can unwind at one of Pymatuning's three campgrounds. Each campground has flushable toilets and hot water, and some of them also provide electricity and playgrounds. Pets are permitted at the Jamestown Campground; reservations are strongly encouraged.
