Art museums can offer beautiful architecture and elegant gardens in addition to amazing pieces of art. Live performances, lectures, classes, and many other special events often take place at museums. Exploring our world through art opens our hearts and minds to different ideas and different cultures. Many pieces of art illuminate landscapes and beautiful scenery from all over the world that we might never have seen had it not been captured by the artist.

National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

A trip to Washington, D.C., wouldn't be complete without a stop to the National Gallery of Art. Exhibitions range from Spanish paintings to a sculpture garden to Modern art such as Warhol's. There are two buildings that house art, and each building houses art from different time periods. The West building focuses on art from the thirteenth century to the nineteenth century featuring artists such as Cassatt, Van Dyck and Da Vinci.

The East building features twentieth century art from artists such as Calder, Matisse and Picasso. The outside modern sculpture garden is one of the best features. Seventeen pieces of art await you in the sculpture garden, and in the summer you can even enjoy jazz music while taking in the sculptures. View the museum's website to view current exhibitions.

The National Gallery Art is open every day and there is no charge to view the museum. You can visit the museum from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Getty Museum in Los Angeles

The exquisite Getty Museum in Los Angeles features artwork from European and American cultures. The architecture, gardens and view from the museum are astonishing. Nestled in the hills of Santa Monica, the museum offers guests an outstanding view of the city and ocean below.

At the museum, you can explore artwork from artists such as Monet, Van Gogh and Renoir. Visitors can view a collection of elegant French furniture as well as a large collection of Impressionist paintings. One of the jewels of the museum is that some of the paintings are illuminated with natural sunlight versus artificial sunlight, which allows viewers to experience the piece in light in which the artist created the piece. Other jewels are the modern and contemporary sculptures. There is a large collection of twentieth-century sculptures to explore in the gardens. There is a little something for everyone to enjoy at the Getty Museum.

The cost of admission is free, but parking is $15, until 5 p.m.; then it is free. The museum is closed on Monday. It is open Tuesday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday the museum is open from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and it is open on Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City

Explore 5,000 year old art in the exciting city of New York. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, or the Met, is located near Central Park in New York City and features work from all over the world. The museum contains so much art that it is difficult to see everything in one day.

Guests can see Egyptian mummies, Native American masks and Islamic carvings, just to name a few. In the American wing, guests will view sculptures, furniture, costumes and the Frank Lloyd Wright room. The Met recently renovated their Greek and Roman galleries and now these collections contain even more artifacts, paintings and sculptures to view. Exhibitions at the Met range from Japanese art to Aboriginal Australian paintings. You will need to contact the Met or visit their website for current exhibitions as they are constantly changing. In 2008, Reuters named the Met as one of the top ten museums in the world.

The Met is closed on Mondays. Their hours of operation on Tuesdays through Thursdays are 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday the Met is open 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Sunday it is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.The cost of admission is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $10 for children.

High Museum of Art in Atlanta

Explore art in an award-winning architectural building in the heart of Atlanta. The High Museum is known for its collection of nineteenth and twentieth century art from artists such as Sully and Church. The High offers collections in decorative arts, African Art, European art, American Art and many others. Once a month, the High Museum of Art offers jazz music for visitors to enjoy.

Price for admission is $18 for adults, $15 for seniors sixty-five or older, $15 for students and children six to seventeen, and it is free for children five or younger. The High is closed on Mondays, but it is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Sundays, the hours of operation are 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
