Lakeside Campgrounds That Are Open in April in Marblehead, Ohio
Marblehead, Ohio, is located in northwest Ohio between Toledo and Cleveland on the shores of Lake Erie. The area often is visited by by tourists because of its centralized location and nearby historic landmarks and amusement parks. While April still can be considered a cooler month in the North for campers with temperatures averaging between 50 and 60 degrees, there still are plenty of things to do in the area.

Fort Firelands RV Park

The Fort Firelands RV Park on Lake Erie is more of a retreat than a weekend getaway. Open the first week of April, this campground embraces Marblehead's history.

With paved drives and 50-amp service, this campground treats you like you are at home. Pull-through RV sites are grassy and have plenty of shade, allowing you to have plenty of room for outdoor activities next to your camper or RV. There are picnic tables and fire rings at every site. Fort Firelands also has a large parking lot for storing your boat and trailer when not in use.

This campground is a replica of a frontier fort and is near the lake. It also borders several inlets flowing from Lake Erie that offer great catch-and-release fishing throughout the park.

There is a restaurant, antique and gift shop on site as well as a weekend flea market so you barely have to leave the park. There is a miniature golf course, a pool, a playground and laundromat for relaxing and taking care of yourself throughout your stay.

Downtown Marblehead is just a short drive away and offers a myriad of unique shops and eateries. Rates start at $45 a night as of March 2010.

East Harbor State Park

The East harbor State Park is one of the only state parks directly on Lake Erie in the surrounding area. This campground, combined with the park facilities, offers a variety of activities for the outdoor enthusiast.

Camping is available year-round at this state park, and spring and summer prices start at $21 a night up to $30 as of March 2010.

There a lot of amenities at this park including laundry facilities, play areas, a camp store and picnic tables. Swimming is available at the beach, and fishing is allowed in designated areas.

Pull-through spaces and 50-amp electric service is standard with most of the RV sites at East Harbor. There is also a primitive tenting area with no hookups for those who prefer a natural setting.

East Harbor State Park has several unmarked trails and also a nature center that is open to the public. The park is located on a peninsula on the outskirts of Ohio's prairie marsh zone area, which has many varieties of birds, reptiles and amphibians native to the area.

There is a nearby marina for boaters to dock their boats for the day or week. This park is also just a short drive from Cedar Point, which has some of the world's tallest and fastest roller coasters.

Surf Campground

The Surf Campground in Marblehead sits at the peak of the Marblehead peninsula on the edge of Lake Erie. Open starting April 1, this campground also is home to a motel, and cabin rentals also are available. Rates start at $22 for a primitive campsite and up to $40 a night for a full RV hookups as of March 2010. The campground is impressive with wooded and landscaped lots, mature trees and small inlet canals throughout.

Many full electric hookup sites offer pull-through service, making it easy for large RVs to set up. Sites are also available on the perimeter for those who want a secluded lot or wish to stay for the entire summer season.

Fishing is the popular activity in the area because this particular area of Lake Erie is well-known for its bass and walleye. The grounds have several amenities including a stocked freshwater pond, a swimming pool, a gift shop and laundry facilities.

Enjoy a short ferry ride to the nearby Lake Erie Islands to enjoy a day of sightseeing, fine eateries and entertainment. This campground is near local historical sites such as confederate cemeteries and battlegrounds as well as the historic Marblehead Lighthouse.
