Custer State Park's proximity to Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse national monuments, as well as its easy accessibility from Rapid City Regional Airport and Interstate 90, make it a popular destination. The park has plenty of its own appeal, with 71,000 acres of pine forest, creeks, meadows and endless outdoor recreation opportunities for people of all skill levels. If the outdoors aren't your thing, take in a play at the Black Hills Playhouse, or enjoy an elegant meal featuring traditional dishes or entrees made from local fish and game, created by a resident chef, at the State Game Lodge.

Sylvan Lake Lodge

Sylvan Lake Lodge offers both seclusion and outdoor recreation opportunities at the Black Hills and Custer State Park. The location for Sylvan Lake Lodge was suggested by Frank Lloyd Wright. The cabins near Sylvan Lake can accommodate up to 10 people and range from sleeping cabins with attached bathrooms, to housekeeping cabins with full kitchens, dining areas, bathrooms and separate sleeping areas. Some cabins offer fireplaces.

Sylvan Lake Lodge is located near Needles Highway, which snakes through the Black Hills, highlighting views of dramatic geological formations. Guests can take advantage of several recreational opportunities near Sylvan Lake, including hiking, swimming, fishing and mountain biking. You can also rent various watercraft and mountain bikes. The lakeside store offers supplies for making your stay more comfortable.

Cabin rates range from $140 to $375 per night, with additional charges for pets or additional guests.

Legion Lake Lodge

Legion Lake Lodge is located at the edge of Legion Lake. It offers sleeping rooms, and 25 family-size cabins are located in the wooded area around the lodge. The cabins' decor is nature-inspired, surrounding guests with wildlife and fish art and decor between the large windows with views of the Black Hills and Legion Lake. Cabins can accommodate up to seven people. Some of the cabins are housekeeping cabins, with kitchens, dining areas and separate sleeping areas and bathrooms. No cooking or eating utensils are provided. All cabins have a TV and linens and maid service is provided.

All the cabins are a short walk to the lake and several hiking and biking trails, including the Centennial trail. The Badger Clark hiking trail is also nearby. Clark was a well-known poet in the area who drew much of his inspiration from his surroundings in the Black Hills. Clark's cabin is open for visitors and many of Clark's belongings and handwritten poems are still in the cabin.

Legion Lake Lodge offers casual dining, featuring hamburgers and a deli and bakery. A store in the lodge offers fishing licenses and supplies and other necessities for enjoying your stay. Visitors can also rent mountain bikes, hydrobikes, paddleboats, canoes and kayaks for exploring the lake.

Cabin rental rates range from $135 to $200 per night, with additional charges for pets or additional guests.

Blue Bell Lodge

The Blue Bell Lodge and cabins have a Western flavor, with log cabins decorated in a Western style. The art on the walls features horses and cowboys. Housekeeping cabins offer full kitchens, with stoves, refrigerators and sinks, or kitchenettes. They also feature dining areas and bathrooms and separate sleeping areas. Some can accommodate up to eight people. Sleeping cabins offer sleeping areas and generous-size bathrooms. Some cabins have fireplaces and all cabins have TVs. All cabins have fire rings in the front to allow for evenings around the campfire.

The Blue Bell General Store provides the necessities for visitors, and a variety of activities are nearby for guests' entertainment. Full- or part-day horseback rides can give you a different perspective of the Black Hills. Chuck wagon cookouts, which start with a hayride to a secluded canyon, serve an old-fashioned dinner, followed by Western entertainment.
