Theater & Music Shows in Orlando, Florida
While Orlando may conjure images of commercialized entertainment a la Mickey Mouse, the truth is the Orlando area is a nature lover's paradise. From numerous lakes with boating, skiing and swimming to off-road safari adventures or hiking, an adventure is never far away. And at the end of the day Orlando has an abundance of entertainment choices.

SAK Comedy Lab

If you are in the mood for comedy theater, head to SAK Comedy Lab in downtown Orlando. SAK showcases live comedy improv, appropriate for the entire family, in a 200-seat theater from Tuesdays through Saturdays. The main showcase is "The Duel of Fools," featuring teams of improv comedians thinking on their feet, dueling it out. The audience participates in judging, a piano player adds dramatic flair and free Tootsie Rolls abound. Other shows include seasonal tributes for holidays and special treats such as "Slice of Life," in which audience members can, with advance arrangement, pay to have the Duel of Fools present a comedy scene based on the customer's life, or even that of their friend or family's.

Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra

Perhaps a dramatic musical production or an inspired classical masterpiece better suits your mood. From presentations of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 or Mozart's Concerto for Flute, to the genius of Leonard Bernstein and Benny Goodman, or a tribute to the Beach Boys, the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra showcases the best in music. The orchestra also regularly teams up with Mad Cow Theatre to deliver classics such as Guys and Dolls, My Fair Lady, Carmen and Gershwin's Porgie and Bess. When attending a performance, appropriate attire is office dress or Sunday best; in some instances, party or cocktail attire may be common.

Orlando Ballet

A night out may be complete with a visit to the Orlando Ballet. Athleticism and drama blend together in a variety of dramatic performances. From a condensed version of The Nutcracker to Cinderella or The Persian Princess, held captive by an evil pasha, the ballet has something for everyone in the family. New in 2010 is The Battle of the Sexes, where the men and women face off, "bringing sexy back" to ballet. Performances are Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

Mad Cow Theatre

Started late in 1997 as a two-show collaboration between a group of actors and directors, Mad Cow Theatre caught the critic's attention, and Orlando theater has not been the same since. Mad Cow presents theater suitable for a wide range of audiences; from classic to contemporary works, from simple plays to majestic musicals in collaboration with the Orlando Philharmonic, the best of American and world literature is explored. Alcoholic beverages are available, and Thursday and Sunday nights a "talkback" is held with the cast members after the show. Late arrivals must wait until intermission to be seated, so make sure to leave plenty of time. Children must be at least eight years old to attend.
