Hiking Clubs in the UK

Hiking Clubs in the UK
Hiking trails in the United Kingdom have wide-ranging appeal. The Scottish Highlands, the mounds in the countryside near Leicester and beachfront hiking in Brighton are places where hikers in the U.K. can find wild country. Finding organized hikes in the U.K. is not difficult. There are a variety of hiking clubs, many of which offer open membership.

The Backpackers Club

The Backpackers Club, formed in 1972, welcomes backpackers of all skill levels. As of March 2010, the club has over 1,200 members who enjoy benefits like discount maps, guidebooks, member meetings and a quarterly magazine. Most of the hikes are organized by members in an informal fashion, usually with an advertisement in the magazine. Hikers are encouraged to organize their own events and outings. The club also has a Scottish Week, usually in June, where members can spend a week celebrating Scottish culture and geography with a trek through the Highlands.

Central London Outdoor Group

The Central London Outdoor Group is an association of outdoor enthusiasts in the U.K. This club's main focus is hiking adventures, but members are also known to organize rafting, kayaking, climbing and sailing outings. There is a membership fee (25 British pounds, as of March 2010) to join the club. While many of the trips are organized as backpacking outings--including camping and tenting--some of the trips also stop at local hostels and bed and breakfasts. Trips are organized solely by members.

Northumbria Backpackers

The Northumbria Backpackers club is informally based in Newcastle, in the northeast corner of the U.K. Members meet frequently at the Bridge Pub to discuss outings, members and new policies. Members of the club generally are of expert skill level and often take trips in mid-winter through snow, ice and cold conditions. Membership is open to all interested parties, though. There are often easy weekend trips that end at a pub on Sunday evenings.
