Composed almost entirely of the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, the island of Sanibel, Fla., is full of outdoor activities for children to enjoy. Beaches, playgrounds, nature trails, education centers and more are spread throughout the 8,000-acre complex that provides a habit for 321 species of wildlife, including birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians.

Bowman's Beach

Nestled on 50 acres of the southwest portion of the island, Bowman's Beach is home to multiple kid-friendly activities. Children have the choice of spending the day on the beach swimming or shelling, utilizing the walking or fitness trail where they will have the opportunity to view wildlife, head out for a canoe or kayak ride with an adult or just enjoy themselves at the beach playground. The facilities are also equipped with picnic tables, barbecue grills, restrooms and changing rooms with showers. On-site parking is available for a fee, with the exception of those utilizing handicapped parking, for which there is no charge.

Tarpon Bay Explorers

For children who love to spend their time exploring the outdoors, Tarpon Bay Explorers offers tram tours, nature and sea life cruises and guided kayak and canoe tours. Each exploration is designed to give a fun and up-close-and-personal view of Sanibel Island's wildlife and vegetation while experienced naturalist educate you about the surroundings. In addition to the tours, Tarpon Bay Explorers provides the equipment needed to spend the day fishing with children as well as kayak, canoe, bicycle and pontoon boat rentals. Children can also experience the ultimate in hands-on experiences when they get the chance to interact with ocean life such as sea stars, horseshoe crabs and oysters and view more intriguing species like the sea horse and puffers at the Touch Tank Exploratorium. All of the experiences and rentals come with a fee, with prices varying upon length of time and age.

Sanibel-Captiva Nature Center

The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation manages more than 1,300 acres of land on the island and hosts a nature center with activities that children can delight in. Children can immerse themselves in the natural wildlife with a visit to the butterfly house or touch tank. Explore the center's exhibits or miles of trails that feature observation tours. The more adventurous youngster can set off on a wading, boat or kayak tour of the area or set out on a beach walk if they are looking for something a little more laid-back.
