The Best Fishing Spots in Maryland

The Best Fishing Spots in Maryland
Fishing is a popular outdoor activity in Maryland. According to the 2009 Maryland Fishing Guide, there are more than 650,000 adults and thousands of children who enjoy fishing in the state's waterways on a yearly basis. The state is dedicated to managing many fisheries and stocks numerous ponds, rivers and lakes with trout and other gamefish. Many fishing spots can be considered best depending on the anglers preference of catch, scenery and location.

Deep Creek Lake

Deep Creek Lake fishing is well known for its smallmouth bass fishery but the lake also supports a wide variety of gamefish species including largemouth bass, walleye, yellow perch, bluegill, chain pickerel and northern pike. The lake is Maryland's largest impoundment--it spans 3,900 acres and has 69 miles of shoreline. Anglers can access the lake at Deep Creek Lake State Park, which offers fishing piers, a swimming area, boat ramp, pavilions and campsites. Bass fishing tournaments are popular in the area. Deep Creek Lake boasts many fishing records in the state including the Maryland bluegill record of 3 lbs., 7 oz. and the northern pike record of 24 lbs., 12 oz.
