The Best Alaskan Cruise Packages

The Best Alaskan Cruise Packages
Alaska offers some of North America's most breathtaking scenery and most extreme outdoor adventures. It is a vast wilderness, much of it remaining uncharted. If you're not quite adventurous enough to blaze a trail through the forests and mountains, many cruise lines offer Alaskan cruises. Cruising is an excellent way to see enormous glaciers and rugged coastline. These boats also make stops at some of the most extreme cruise destinations in the world.

Norwegian Cruise Lines

Norwegian Cruise Lines offers seven and eight-day Alaskan cruises with destinations of Sawyer Glacier and Glacier Bay. Norwegian offers what they call "freestyle cruising." This means that guests choose when and where to eat their meals and are not restricted to the regimented schedules that some cruise lines use for their activities.

Shore excursions include kayaking, a zip cable, and an opportunity to see traditional tribal dancing. Between ports, entertain yourself on-board by playing at the ship's casino, relaxing in the spa, or just standing on the deck and enjoying the incredible scenery. The cruise line also offers many activities for children of all ages.

Holland America Line

Holland America cruises explore both Alaska and the Yukon. These cruises are longer, lasting 10 to 14 days, and offering many more ports of call. They also offer smaller group tours, with smaller vessels allowing passage into places the large ships cannot venture.

Perfect for the adventurous, excursions include exploration of the Kenai Peninsula including a two-night stay at the remote Tutka Bay Lodge. Other excursions include Denali National Park, visits to historic gold rush cities, and hiking along the Yukon River.

On-board the ship, there are also many activities available. Take a yoga class, hang out and check your e-mail at the cafe, or peruse the exclusive on-board shops. Holland America also offers special all-inclusive wedding packages.

One of the biggest names in cruising, Royal Caribbean also offers Alaskan cruise tours. The cruise line is known for its luxurious accommodations and wide variety of activities. Go miniature golfing, try your hand at the rock climbing wall, or take in musical and theatrical entertainment.

Royal Caribbean's Alaskan offerings are 10 to 14 days in length. Most are a combination of both cruising and extensive shore excursions, including some overnight stays on land. Destinations include Juneau, the state's capitol. Shore excursions at this port include rainforest hikes and explorations of glacial waterfalls. Other side trips include guided mountain bike tours, dog sled rides, and helicopter rides overlooking glaciers.
