Featuring a moderate summer climate and lots of sun, North Carolina's beaches draw millions of tourist each year. Though the top rated beaches are located along the Outer Banks, there are several other locations that are clean and family friendly. Whether you are looking for a nice place to hike and observe wildlife or a good swimming spot, North Carolina can provide it all.

Carolina Beach State Park

A state-owned park where swimming is prohibited, Carolina Beach State Park provides an array of activities and is popular amongst outdoors and nature enthusiasts. Home to a selection of sea life and wild growing plants, including native Venus Flytraps, the paths and trails here can make an excellent place for nature hikes and picnics. The beach is about 10 miles long, and there is no entrance fee to use the park or any of its five miles of hiking trails.

Wrightsville Beach

One of the state's most populated beaches, Wrightsville is located along the coast near Wilmington at Cape Fear. Generally packed with swimmers during the summer months, it is another cost-free option for vacationers. With several miles of hiking and bike trails, as well as picnic area, lounge chairs and access to snorkeling and kayaking, it is ideal for an active family vacation. Visitors looking for a break from the sun can visit the Cape Fear Museum, filled with history and artifacts; it is an attraction that is no charge and open all year. Accommodations, including motels, hotels and rental properties are available on and near the beach.

Kure Beach

A less populated option, Kure Beach made the New York Times as one of the state's best attractions. Kure Beach is nestled along the southern tip of North Carolina on Pleasure Island. A calm and laid-back location, family friendliness is one of its top tourist pulls. Beaches here are less crowded than in Wrightsville, but also provide swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and picnic spots. Golf, tennis, fishing and fine dining are available nearby.
