Campgrounds in Mississippi River, Minnesota
The Mississippi River begins in northern Minnesota in the Chippewa National Forest. The river goes all the way to the Gulf of Mexico. There are many recreational opportunities along the river with parks to enjoy along the way.
There are many campgrounds along the river, and some are open in the winter. Campgrounds range from the primitive type camping to full-service RV centers.

Crow Wing State Park

Crow Wing State Park is about 20 miles northeast of Brainerd. Canoeing is a favorite activity on the Mississippi and Crow wing rivers, where the water is calm most of the time. There are the remains of a frontier town nearby, and trails to explore. There are 59 campsites, and they are open in winter if you can get to them. Twelve of the sites have electricity and water and two are handicapped accessible. There is one group camping area. Cabins are also available, which provide a bed and electricity is available. Showers are available in summer, as well as flush toilets. In winter vault toilets are used.

Oak Haven Resort

Oak Haven Resort is where the Mississippi River begins. There are nine lakes in the immediate area, as well as the river. The campground is close to the Chippewa National Forest. There are nine sites that have water and electricity. Three sites are for tents and have no connections. There are 11 cabins with heat and air conditioning, cable-TV, fireplaces, stove and refrigerator. Oak Haven has two heated swimming pools, restrooms and showers, laundry, as well as use of free paddle boats and canoes.

Bemidji State Park

Bemidji State Park is where the Mississippi begins as a creek. You can walk across it here easily. There are many trails in the area, as well as creeks, lakes and rivers. This campground has 95 sites and almost all of them are in the woods. Some sites are available in winter. Four of those sites are pull-through sites, and 43 of those sites have electric hookups with 30-amp connections. Four of the sites are handicapped accessible. There are showers and bathrooms at the site. There are two group camping areas.
