Fun Winter Activities in Indiana
Indiana has several claims to fame. The state has more miles of interstate highway per square mile than any other; it has more than 100 native species of trees; and one county, Parke, boasts 32 covered bridges and the notoriety as the Covered Bridge Capital of the World, according to The Hoosier state also has a notable array of fun winter activities to enjoy.

Cross Country Skiing

Indiana offers a grand array of places to go cross country skiing. Most hiking trails will welcome cross country skiers at local, state or federal parks. You can also cross county ski at a number of public school campuses or even golf courses. France Park is especially welcoming to cross country skiing, with trails that run the gamut from easy to challenging. Scenic routes are the norm on all trails, while the easier ones work for beginners or youngsters and the challenging ones give skiers quite a workout. France Park skiing requires at least 4 inches of snow and skiers must bring their own equipment.

Downhill Skiing and Tubing

Indiana features a few larger hills ideal for downhill skiing and tubing. Perfect North Slopes features ski lifts to get you quickly up the snowy slopes and also offers equipment rental. The slopes are geared mainly toward beginners, but there are a few challenging areas of terrain for ski jumps and rail slides. Perfect North has a total of 22 trails with the highest reaching 400 feet and also offers lessons, group rates and season passes.

Hiking and Wildlife Viewing

Those looking for a snowy hike and winter wildlife will find both in Indiana. Nature preserves are ideal wildlife and hiking spots and you certainly have your choices, with 229 of them in the state. Pine Hills Nature Preserve, located in Shades State Park, is an ideal one to try for its varied terrain. The Nature Conservancy website recommends combining the Pine Hills trail with the Shades State Park trail for an extended scenic winter hike.
