Monticello is located in southeast Minnesota within Wright County. The Mississippi River flows through town, making the area great for fishing, boating and canoeing. Bird-watchers visiting in winter can experience the yearly pilgrimage of Trumpeter Swans, which visit the area to nest. With 24 city-owned parks, visitors will not be at a loss for outdoor activities. Campers have a wealth of wooded campsites at their disposal.

River Terrace Park

River Terrace Park is located on 40 acres in a wooded, rural setting on the Mississippi River. Tent campers have 13 primitive campsites, which include a picnic table and fire ring, situated away from RVs. There are 87 full hookup campsites with 30- or 50-amp service. The park has restrooms, showers and a camp store, a dump station and offers bike rentals. Pets are accepted. There is a hiking/biking trail within the park. Boaters and anglers can utilize the park's boat ramp for fishing and exploring the Mississippi River. The 14-mile long, paved Monticello City Pathway is located within Monticello, offering opportunities for hiking, biking or viewing the area's wildlife.

Lake Maria State Park

Seven miles west of Monticello and located on 1,600 heavily forested acres is the Lake Maria State Park. The park is one of the last areas in this region of Minnesota that is thick with tall maples, oaks and basswood trees and is located on Lake Maria. There are 17 backpacking campsites, which are secluded, private and overlook one of the areas lakes or ponds. It is approximately a 1-mile hike to each site. There is a group camping area. Vault toilets are located throughout the park, and flush toilets are located at the Trail Center. Campsites are on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a picnic area and fishing pier located on the lake. The park offers 16 miles of hiking trails and 14 miles of cross-country skiing trails, as well as opportunities for wildlife viewing. Harry Larson County Park is located approximately 4 miles east, offering 2 miles of hiking and cross-country skiing trails.

Ann Lake Campground & Day-Use Area

Ann Lake Campground & Day-Use Area is located approximately 11 miles from Monticello in the Sand Dunes State Forest. The campground is located on Ann Lake and offers 36 primitive campsites, each with a picnic table and fire ring. Campsites are heavily wooded and private. There are 15 horse campsites. The campground has two wells and vault toilets throughout. Camping is on a first-come, first-served basis. Hikers can utilize the park's 3 miles of hiking trails. The day-use area is located adjacent to the campground on Ann Lake, offering opportunities for swimming, fishing and canoeing. Montissippi County Park is located approximately 10 miles away. The park, located directly on the Mississippi River, has a boat launch, fishing pier, hiking, biking and cross-country ski trails.
