Nestled in the beautiful Catskills Mountains in New York, the town of Margaretville is a premier weekend destination for the entire family. Easily accessible from New York City, the Catskills area is most famous as a winter skiing landmark. During other seasons, there are scenic hiking trails, wineries, mountain hiking, camping, fishing and other outdoor activities in southeastern New York State, where the back country roads meet the Delaware River. A vacation in Margaretville and the Catskills is perfectly suited for kids and adults. Following are four popular attractions that are sure to please the young explorers of the family.

Delaware and Ulster Railroad

The Arkville depot is located only a few minutes north of Margaretville, and is a fun experience for travelers of all ages. It has a snack stand, gift shop and visitor's exhibit, where visitors can learn about the history of the railroad in this region. The railroad trip will allow kids to see the charming scenes of rolling hills, water reservoirs, small farming towns and mountains of the Catskills. The cost is $12 for adults and $7 for children ages three to 12. No reservations are required.

North-South Lake State Park

Parents can enhance the outdoor experience with a family camping or fishing trip in the North-South Lake State Park near the Catskills Mountains. New Yorkers have been spotting more wild species than ever before. Visitors can expect to encounter all kinds of local birds, freshwater fishes, crustaceans, river otters and more. The nightly camping fee is $18 to 22, depending on the spot. The campgrounds are generally open from May until September.

Belleayre Mountain

For decades, Belleayre Mountain has been a well-known skiing and snowboarding destination. For those who love to ski, this is a great place with kid-friendly programs to introduce them to the sport. The resort offers a Kids Camp program every winter season to accommodate all ages and skill levels. During their stay, they will also enjoy a variety of entertainment, dining and events as a family. Two-day tickets for adults are $96 ($78 during midweek), $70 for youth and $22 for toddlers. There are additional costs that may apply, such as lift tickets, lodging and lessons.

Windham Mountain

Another extraordinary winter spot, the Windham Mountain is 35 miles north of Margaretville, and it accommodates families with a range of activities, whether they prefer the scenery or the pure action. Other than skiing, the snowy banks of Windham is fun for tubing and ice skating. Kids, from toddlers to teens, will love the lessons on the slopes as well as the entertainment, themed events, bungee trampoline and rock climbing wall offered on site. The costs of skiing and lodging packages will vary. Regularly season rates for skiing at Windham Mountain start at $39 per day for adults, $24 for ages seven to 12 and $10 for ages one to six.

Zoom Flume Water Park

Located an hour north of Margaretville, this is New York's most sought-after water park perfect for those warm summer months. Open from June through September, the Zoom Flume Water Park includes giant, winding water slides that run 300 feet long, swimming pools and a number of exhilarating rides in a picturesque natural setting. One-day admission is $23.95 for adults and $19.95 for children ages seven and under. If families only wish to take advantage of the park's sun decks and picnic tables, they can get a Spectator Pass for only $12.95.
