Campgrounds in Rothsay, Minnesota
Rothsay is a small community in Minnesota's lake country, 200 miles northeast of Minneapolis. Bird watchers traveling to the area stop at Rothsay State Wildlife Management Area, six miles west of Rothsay. The 3,000 protected acres are home to the greater prairie chicken as well as the sandhill crane, Smith's and Lapland longspurs and the short-eared owl.

Maplewood State Park

Maplewood State Park covers 9,250 acres and features eight major lakes as well as numerous ponds. Both RV and primitive tent sites are available. Park facilities include showers, flush toilets and a dump station, although some sites have only vault toilets. There are 25 miles of hiking trails within the park, in addition to the 2.2-mile self-guided nature trail. There is a fishing pier, swimming beach and two boat-access points in the park, and in winter there are 13 miles of cross-country skiing trails to explore.

Buffalo River State Park

Buffalo River State Park is north of Rothsay near the North Dakota border. The park features sites for both RV and tent campers and 50-, 30- and 20-amp electrical service is available at most of the sites. There is also a group site available that can accommodate up to 100 people. Showers and flush toilets are available in the campground and picnic areas, and vault toilets are scattered throughout the park. Buffalo River State Park features 13 miles of hiking trails that wind through forests and prairies, and both snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are popular winter activities.

Swan Lake Resort

Swan Lake Resort is south of Rothsay in an 18-acre forest of oak, maple and cottonwood trees. Swan Lake offers primitive campsites for tent campers as well as developed sites for RVs. Five cabins are also available. Swan Lake Resort offers outdoor enthusiasts boating and fishing opportunities. Fishing boats are available to rent on a daily and weekly basis, and canoes and kayaks are free for use by registered guests.
