Zimmerman, Minnesota, is 50 miles north of Minneapolis. The many lakes that surround Zimmerman were created when large glaciers receded during the end of the last ice age. These lakes now provide outdoor recreational opportunities. Boating, kayaking and fishing are all popular sports there. In addition, birds and other wildlife supported by the lakes provide opportunities for nature viewing and photography.

Sand Dunes State Forest

Sand Dunes State Forest is in Sherburne County, just eight miles west of Zimmerman. The Ann Lake Campground in the park has 36 campsites. All campsites are designated as primitive and offer only a cleared tent space, fire ring and picnic table. In addition, vault toilets, garbage cans and potable water are available on site. Adjacent to the campsite is the Ann Lake Day Use Area, which features a sandy beach for swimming, panfish fishing and a three-mile nature trail. Sand Dunes State Forest is popular for hiking and mountain biking, canoeing and kayaking. In addition, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are popular winter sports.

Olson's Campground on Limestone Lake

Olson's Campground on Limestone Lake is southwest of Zimmerman and features primitive tent sites along the shores of the 188-acre Limestone Lake. Each tent site includes a fire ring and picnic table. Restroom and shower facilities are available on site. There is a camp store and playground area for children. The campground is near Lake Maria State Park, one of the few preserved examples of the maple, oak and basswood forests that once covered part of southern Minnesota. Maria Lake features 14 miles of hiking trails in addition to two, one-mile self-guided nature trails. There are also both paved cycling and mountain biking trails.

Fish Lake Resort

Fish Lake Resort is northeast of Zimmerman along Minnesota's Route 23. Primitive tent sites are available, and each includes a campfire circle and picnic table. A restroom and shower house is available on site. A large picnic area can be reserved by groups, and a coin-operated laundromat is available. Paddle boats, kayaks and canoes are available for rental by the hour. Canoeists may want to use Fish Lake Resort as a base camp for exploring the Rum River. The Rum River begins at Lake Mille Lacs and flows 145 miles before joining the Mississippi. It has been designated a wild and scenic river by the state of Minnesota. There are class I and II rapids at various points along the river.
