Monteagle is a small community on the Cumberland Plateau in southeastern Tennessee. Monteagle mountain has been a vacation getaway for area residents since the late 1700s, and the plateau's lakes, rivers and forests provide opportunities for outdoor recreation, from hiking and biking to fishing and canoeing.

Tims Ford State Park

Tims Ford State Park is on the 10,700-acre Tims Ford Lake, only 30 miles west of Monteagle, Tennessee. The park offers a 52-site campground, and each site can fit up to two large tents and six people. The campground features two bathhouses with lavatories and commodes, and a playground is available for children. Laundry facilities are also available on site. Boating ramps, a dock, boat rentals and a bait shop are all available at Lakeview Marina, located inside the park. Anglers fish for bluegill, bass, catfish and crappie. Five miles of paved trails are in the park for hikers and cyclists.

Southern Comfort Resort

Southern Comfort Resort is 25 miles north of Monteagle and features both primitive tent camping and tent sites with 20-amp electrical service. Each tent site has a fire ring and picnic table. Guests can request an isolated site or clustered sites suitable for group reservations. Shower facilities are available, as well as a recreation center and swimming pool. Southern Comfort Resort is west of one of Tennessee's largest state wilderness parks, the Savage Gulf State Natural Area. Savage Gulf is a 15,590-acre parcel on the western edge of the Cumberland Plateau. Fifty miles of trails allow hikers access Savage Gulf's natural landscapes, including many waterfalls. Backcountry camping and picnicking sites are also available. Wildlife viewing is a popular activity. Black bear sightings happen occasionally, and visitors are advised to act with caution.

Prentice-Cooper State Forest

Prentice-Cooper State Forest is a 24,311-acre preserve in Marion County, east of Monteagle. Camping is available at two sites, Davis Pond and Hunter's Check Station. Both campgrounds are considered primitive and offer pit toilets and campfire rings only. All campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Prentice-Cooper State Forest has 35 miles of hiking trails, and bicycling is permitted on all forest service roads within the park. Naturalists will appreciate the 350-acre Hick's Gap Natural Area, which was created to protect the federally endangered large-flowered skullcap.
