Cleveland, Tennessee Area Campgrounds

Cleveland, Tennessee Area Campgrounds
Situated in the rugged mountains of East Tennessee, Cleveland has a lot to offer to campers looking for outdoor adventure. The town is conveniently located off I-75, between Chattanooga and Knoxville, and offers a central location for exploring the larger region. Campgrounds in the Cleveland area can access Cherokee National Forest to the east and Chickamauga Lake (a reservoir of the Tennessee River) to the west, offering plenty of hiking, fishing, canoeing, mountain biking and other possibilities.

Chattanooga North/Cleveland KOA

The Cleveland KOA offers a mix of sites for RV and tent camping, as well as rustic one- and two-bedroom cabins and more luxurious "Kamping Kottages." The two tent-camping areas are lightly wooded and separated from the rest of the KOA by a creek that runs through the property. Camping facilities at the KOA include a shower house, coin laundry, and LP gas and firewood sales. Other amenities include free Wi-Fi access, swimming pool and bicycle rentals. The KOA is located just off I-75, making it a good campground for those who want to commute down to the Civil War battlefield parks around Chattanooga or take in the attractions of Lookout Mountain, such as Rock City and Ruby Falls.

Harrison Bay State Park

The 1,200-acre Harrison Bay State Park enjoys a 40-mile stretch of Chickamauga Lake shoreline, and offers campers 128 RV sites and 21 tent-only sites. The campground is serviced by a centrally-located shower house and playground. The park has a boat ramp and marina with boat rentals, and offers fishing for bass, bluegill and catfish. It also has hiking trails and an outdoor swimming pool. In addition to being an outdoor attraction in its own right, Harrison Bay has convenient access (by car or by boat) to other sites on Chickamauga Lake, such as Chester Frost Park directly across the lake. The state park is located roughly 10 miles to the west of Cleveland.

Chilhowee Campground

Chilhowee Campground is part of Cherokee National Forest, and is located less than 15 miles east of Cleveland. It is open from April to October. Chilhowee offers a mix of RV and tent sites. Among these are some walk-in, tents-only campsites. All sites have barbecue grills, picnic tables and lantern posts, and many of the sites (including all of the walk-in tent sites) have electrical hookups. Water taps are located throughout the campground, and each of the two camping loops has a centrally-located bathhouse. The campground offers fishing piers on McKay Lake, a swimming beach on the lake, and access to some Cherokee National Forest hiking trails. Chilhowee Campground's location off U.S. 64 and on the western edge of Cherokee National Forest makes it the most logical choice for campers who want to balance exploring the forest with staying near the Cleveland area, as the windy mountain roads make campsites deeper inside the forest's enclosure a long drive back to both Cleveland and I-75.
