Public Campgrounds near Cherokee Lake, Tennessee
Cherokee Lake, near Morristown in the rolling Tennessee hills, is a Tennessee Valley Authority Reservoir, whose dam, built in 1941, created the lake on the Holston River. The lake is known for fishing, especially striped bass and a variety of other fish. Panther Creek State Park is on the edge of the lake and provides a boat ramp and other recreational activities, including nature trails. The dam has a day use area and a campground. Campgrounds surround the lake, and there are many trails around the lake.

Greenlee Campgrounds

The people who run the Greenlee campsites liked what they started so much they added more. There are three campsites on the lake operated by this group.
The original site is on the northeast side of the lake. There are five cabins that sleep four to six people. The cabins have full kitchens including utensils. The cabins have heat and air conditioning, cable TV and full bathrooms with showers.
There are a few RV sites with 30 amp hookups. There is a beach, a small store and a marina. Two pontoon boats are available for rent.

The Fall Creek campground is a 140-acre peninsula in Hamblen County. There is primitive camping along the lake, and 40 RV sites with electricity and water.

May Springs is on the main channel of the lake in Grainger County. This site has a full-service boat dock with slips available. There are campsites that range from primitive to full hookups. This site also has five cabins. There are walking trials at all the campsites and at many locations around the lake.

Panther Creek State Park

Panther Creek State Park is on the shores of Cherokee Lake. Panther Creek empties into the lake near the park. This state park has 13 hiking and biking trails on the 1,435-acre site. The trails are rather short, ranging from point three miles to two and a half miles. Five of the trails are for hikers only, and the others are for hikers and bikers.

The trails are connected, so you could easily make them into a much longer trail.
Panther Creek has 50 campsites with water and electric hookups. There are grills, picnic tables, fire rings and a bathhouse facility. The campground does not take reservations. Fishing is the major activity on the lake. Boat rentals are available at the campground and at many other marinas in the area. Panther Creek also offers seven miles of horseback riding trails.

Cherokee Dam Campground

Cherokee Dam Campground, located on the other side of the lake near the dam, is a self-service facility operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority. There are 42 campsites with water and electrical hookups, heated showers and toilets. There is a playground with a beach nearby, along with a pavilion for public use. There are several trails, including a paved one near the dam, along with boat ramps on both sides of the dam, so you can launch your boat in the lake or in the river. Fishing is the main activity at this lake, and the dam area offers it in abundance.
